The Second Symposium on Liquid Crystal Photonics and 3D Forum was successfully held at Sichuan University in Chengdu on April 20-21, 2013. More than 200 domestic and foreign experts and scholars attended the conference to discuss the latest developments in the liquid crystal and 3D industry. The latest achievements of the industry, such as glasses-free 3D display system and integral imaging 3D tablet PC, were released at the conference.
The conference was hosted by the Beijing Chapter of the Society for Information Display, the Optical Society of America and the Natural Science Foundation of China, and organized by the College of Electronics and Information Engineering of Sichuan University and the State Key Laboratory of Fundamental Science on Synthetic Vision. It was one of the largest and highest profile academic conferences in the field of liquid crystal photonics in China.
The chairman of the conference organizing committee, Vice President Shi-Jing Yan of Sichuan University, attended the opening ceremony of the conference and made a speech. The chairman of the conference, Prof. Shin-Tson Wu of the University of Central Florida, USA, made a speech for the conference. The chairman of the conference program committee, Prof. Qiong-Hua Wang of Sichuan University, presided over the opening ceremony. Bin Jiang, Secretary of Sichuan University, Xiao-Hai He Vice Dean of the College of Electronics and Information Engineering of Sichuan University, Prof. Yan-Qing Lu, vice chair of the conference, and Li Xuan, vice chair of the conference program committee and Prof. Yi-Kai Su attended the conference. The participants included 203 experts, scholars and researchers in the field of liquid crystal and 3D display from USA, Canada, Switzerland, UK, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan ,mainland China and other regions (32 from outside China).
The conference included nine conference keynote presentations by Martin Schadt, Shin-Tson Wu, Hoi Sing Kwok, Han-Ping D. Shieh, Iam-Choon Khoo, Tomiki Ikeda, Sin-Doo Lee, Vladimir Chigrinov, and Prof. Sui Wei. Li Xuan, Liang-Chy Chien, Huai Yang, Xiao-Wei Sun, Yan-Qing Lu, Kei-Hsiung Yang, Fu-Zi Yang, Andy Y. G. Fu, Wei Lee, Yan-Lei Yu, Hong-Wen Ren, Yo Shimizu, Yue Zhao, Dong Shen, Yi-Hsin Lin, and Qiong-Hua Wang gave invitation/oral presentations. Besides, there were 44 student poster presentations. The presentations covered new liquid crystal materials, optoelectronic display devices, photonic devices, and 3D displays.
During the conference, the 24th “Tianfu Innovation Forum” was held to discuss the development trend of 3D display. The forum was hosted by Sichuan Association for Science and Technology and organized by Sichuan Optical Society. Vice Chairman of Sichuan Association for Science And Technology, Jing-Yue Huang, attended the forum and delivered a speech. The experts and scholars who attended the forum had an in-depth exchange and discussion on 3D display technology and 3D industry development. Experts believe that: on the one hand, we should increase the investment to strengthen the cutting-edge 3D technology research and to seize the first opportunity to occupy the high ground in the future market; on the other hand, we should focus on the development direction of the industrialization of 3D technology, strengthen the combination of industry, academia and research, accelerate the pace and cycle of technology transformation, so that 3D research can effectively serve the 3D industry. Prof. Shin-Tson Wu from University of Central Florida, Prof. Sui Wei from Anhui University, Prof. Yong-Tian Wang from Beijing University of Technology, Prof. Yi-Kai Su from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. Ji an-Ying Zhou from Sun Yat-sen University, Prof. Yi-Bai Huang from National Chiao Tung University, Vice President Ning Chen from Changhong Electronics Group, Vice President Chang-Chang Zhu from TCL Group Industrial Research Institute, and Zhi-Hua Ling from Tianma Microelectronics Co. Ltd. and 14 experts from universities and enterprises made presentations and had a lively discussion with more than 60 participants. The forum was initiated by Prof. Qiong-Hua Wang of Sichuan University, the board member of Sichuan Optical Society and the recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Minister Xian-Jun Xiao and Vice Minister Mei Li of the Society Department of Sichuan Science and Technology Association and Director Xiao-Dong Gao and Secretary Wei Liang of the Sichuan Optical Society gave careful guidance and support to this forum.
The conference dinner featured the awarding of student posters and several special celebrations, including: celebrating the 75th birthday of Dr. Martin Schadt, a leading expert in the field of liquid crystal; celebrating the election of Prof. Shin-Tson Wu as the Inaugural Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Inventors; celebrating Prof. Hoi Sing Kwok winning the Slottow Owaki Prize of the Society for Information Display; celebrating the election of Prof. Bao-Ping Wang, Vice President of Southeast University, as the Fellow of the Society for Information Display; celebrating three experts in the field of liquid crystal and 3D display, Prof. Yan-Qing Lu from Nanjing University, Prof. Yan-Lei Yu from Fudan University, and Prof. Qiong-Hua Wang from Sichuan University winning the 2021 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Dean Chang-Wei Hu of Sichuan University Research Institute attended the dinner and delivered a speech. Secretary Bin Jiang from the College of Electronics and Information Engineering of Sichuan University and Executive Deputy Director Jun-Feng Wang from the State Key Laboratory of Fundamental Science on Synthetic Vision of Sichuan University attended the dinner. Dr. Martin Schadt, Prof. Shin-Tson Wu, Prof. Hoi Sing Kwok, Prof. Vladimir Chigrinov and Prof. Sui Wei presented awards to five student Poster winners, namely, Lei Wang from Nanjing University, Dong Liang from Sichuan University, Bo-Wei Liu from East China University of Science and Technology, Wen-Bin Huang from Changchun Institute of Optics and Technology and Ling Yuan from Sichuan University, respectively.
Institute of Information Display at Sichuan University released the latest scientific research results in the international leading or advanced level at the conference, including 2.5-5.5 inch glasses-free 3D display system, real shooting and 3D system, integral imaging 3D tablet PC, 1D and 2D integrated imaging 3D painting; high-performance transmissive blue phase liquid crystal display, viewing angle controllable blue phase liquid crystal display; optical switch based on adjustable aperture, liquid optical switch based on air pressure drive and other lenses and optical switch devices.
It was decided that the 3rd International Symposium on Liquid Crystal Photonics would be held in Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Liquid crystal and 3D displays are strategic emerging industry with an annual output value of over $100 billion, and is a pioneering pillar industry in the information age. This conference provides a broad and high-quality communication platform for domestic and foreign scholars, which is of positive significance to promoting the research and rapid development of liquid crystal and 3D technology in China, and is also a high recognition of Sichuan University’s comprehensive research strength, especially the strength of liquid crystal and 3D research.
Before the conference, three distinguished experts who represent the current level of display field, Dr. Martin Schadt from Switzerland, Prof. Shin-Tson Wu from USA and Prof. Sin-Doo Lee from Korea gave lectures to students and teachers entitled “From science to invention and vice versa”, “American dream: my personal story”, and “Principles and perspectives of 3D display”, respectively.
