The 11th CSIG Symposium on 3D Images was held in Beijing from June 2 to 4, 2021. More than 230 experts, scholars, researchers and enterprise scientists from all over the country attended the conference and discussed the latest research results, technological innovations and applications in the field of 3D images in recent years. The latest achievements in the industry, such as light field 3D display and continuous optical zoom microscope were exhibited at the conference.

The conference was organized by the China Society of Image and Graphics, and jointly organized by the Technical Committee on 3D Imaging and Display, the School of Instrumentation and Optoelectronic Engineering and the State Key Laboratory of Virtual Reality Technology and Systems of Beihang University. Academician Qin-Ping Zhao of Beihang University, Prof. Li-Jun Xu, Dean of School of Instrumentation and Optoelectronic Engineering of Beihang University, and Prof. Yuan-Qing Wang, chairman of the conference, delivered opening speeches. Prof. Yong-Tian Wang, chairman of the conference program committee, presided over the conference report. Prof. Qiong-Hua Wang, chairman of the conference organization committee, presided over the opening and closing ceremonies.

The conference invited Academician Zhong-Can Ou-Yang from Chinese Academy of Sciences and nearly 80 experts from dozens of units including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Beihang University, Beijing Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong, Seoul National University, Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese PLA General Hospital to bring academic reports on the field of 3D images. Nearly 30 young scholars and graduate students exhibited the posting reports and presented a wonderful academic feast. Prof. Qiong-Hua Wang, Assoc. Prof. Chao Liu and Dr. Di Wang from the lab gave the invited presentations entitled “Integrated imaging desktop true 3D display technology”, “Liquid zoom lens based microscope” and “Holographic display technology based on spatial light modulators”, respectively.

The latest products related to 3D image technology from several units were exhibited. The integral imaging-based light field 3D display and the liquid lens-based continuous optical zoom microscope developed by the lab were exhibited and received good comments from the visitors. The light field 3D display has the features of comfortable viewing and strong stereoscopic feeling. The continuous optical zoom microscope has the features of continuous optical zoom, no mechanical jitter during zooming and fast zooming.

The Technical Committee on 3D Imaging and Display held a working meeting during this conference. The work of the technical committee in the past two years was reviewed. After discussion, it was decided that the next conference will be held in Shenzhen. Besides, the committee members were co-opted. Associate Professor Chao Liu from the lab was elected as a member of the committee.

More than 30 teachers and students from the lab attended the conference. Most of them did service work, which provided a strong guarantee for the smooth convening of the conference.

Nowadays, 3D image technology is developing rapidly and has been widely used in science and technology, education, medicine, military and entertainment. To realize the change of China from following to running and leading in this technology field, we need to conduct in-depth research on the key technologies and key equipment of new 3D images. This academic conference on 3D image technology provides a good platform for experts, scholars, researchers and enterprise scientists to learn and communicate with each other, which will surely promote the faster and better development of 3D image technology.
